MELVILLE ISLAND PARISH
Our Lady of Victories Church, Pirlangimpi (Garden Point),
St Monica's Church, Milikapiti (Snake Bay).
This island forms part of the traditional Tiwi Aboriginal Lands. The population is about eight hundred people. The church became formally established in 1940 with the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. With this spirituality the church has grown and found rich soil in the Tiwi Culture. The story of faith has also had its sorrows that are recorded at the statue of Our Lady of Victories, Pirlangimpi (Garden Point):
"The Garden Point Association wishes to acknowledge all part Aboriginal children who were removed from their families to the care of the Garden Point Catholic Mission during the 1940's-1960's."
The first annual National Sorry day fell during the Plenary meeting of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference on the 26th of May, 1998. An official statement was released by the Bishops’ Conference and a ‘Sorry Book’ was signed by members of the Conference in remembrance of the day. Bishops seek forgiveness from the "Stolen Generation" on National Sorry Day
